Languages
Characters begin play knowing the common language of the land. Non-human characters also start knowing their own people's language (halfling, elvish, dwarvish).
You may start play knowing an additional language per point of Intelligence bonus.
Starting with less than 9 Intelligence means you are illiterate in your own language, but you can still speak it.
Commonly chosen languages include:
- Elvish
- Dwarvish
- Halfling
- Goblin
- Orc
- Dragon
- Subterranean
Rare languages in old books include:
- Protocommon
- Elder Sylvan
- The Old Tongue "Visirian"
Other languages can exist which require a class or special circumstance to learn:
- Thieves' Cant can only be learned by Thieves
- Druidic can only be learned by Druids
- Lawful is the alignment language of law - most lawful beings do not know this language, but it is commonly used in holy scripture and by agents of lawful gods (Angels, Automata, Archpriests).
- Chaotic is the alignment language of Chaos - most chaotic beings do not know this language, you are likely to hear it spoken by infernal fiends, wicked djinn and tricky fae.
Speaking a class or alignment language in the wrong context can bring unwanted attention to you - be careful.
